![]() ![]() In other words, in order to respect nonhuman nature - in order to save it, and, in turn, save ourselves - we must recognize nonhuman nature as protagonists in their own story of life on our planet. For Plumwood, the challenge is to reanimate matter, to help humans see the intentionality and agency of nonhuman nature. The problem is that humans have long ignored this nonhuman intelligence, with massive ecological consequences that threaten not only the future of nonhuman nature, but the future of humans, too. Nature, Plumwood argues, is not passive, subject to human mastery, but instead holds its own species-specific forms of intelligence, communication, and consciousness.
